Snake Boat Races

During Onam, the ten-day harvest festival of Kerala, the mythical ruler of the region's golden age returns to visit his people. The snake boats welcome him back. Long, narrow, carved in the shape of a cobra, and powered by up to 150 people chanting and rowing to a drum beat, the snake boats glide smoothly on the water. Tens of thousands of spectators lined the shore for miles. At the end of the day, the boat that raised the loudest, longest cheers from the crowd was not the winner but rather the one paddled by women.
