Fresh mussels for dinner

One of the boatmen, N. Sathyanasan, invited us to his home for mussels. He turned the boat down a side canal and then anchored it in the middle of a small, protected bay. A friendly call brought out a canoe to carry us to shore. After a tour of his town's brand-new temple, we returned to his house to find a large basket of mussels freshly harvested from the canal by his sons and nephews. A few minutes over a fire opened their shells, and then we simmered the meat in a spicy coconut sauce. Here you can see me removing the meat from still-hot shells while a circle of over 50 curious neighbors watched.
