Tea plantations
On the misty hills that rise toward Coonoor, tea plants
are pruned flat into waist-high "table" shapes for easier
pinching of the tender, new leaves. (You can see the lighter green color
of the young tips peeking above the dark, mature leaves.) Premium Nilgiri
Blue Mountain tea grows in this region, just over the tip of the Western
Ghats and sloping down into Tamil Nadu. Most of what I saw, though, was
destined for teabags and Orange Pekoe labels. Occasionally, we saw tea
pickers with baskets on their backs making their way through the maze of
tea plants.
